You're right. It is already possible. Select limited region under the
layout's camera menu, then go back to the layout screen, hold down the L-key
(lower case) and you will see a square box highlight on the screen. While
holding down the L-key, point your mouse on the corner of the box and resize
it, point your mouse in the center of the box and you can move the whole
thing. Hit the F9 or F10 key and watch it render a piece of your whole
scene.
